Why West Coast carports are built differently
This is the most wind-exposed stretch of the Cape Town metro. The summer south-easter comes in off Table Bay with very little between it and the coast, and it carries salt. Two things follow. First, wind loading governs the structure: post spacing, footing depth and bracing matter more here than anywhere else in the metro, and an under-specified frame will move. Second, salt-laden air attacks untreated mild steel quickly, which is why we specify galvanized steel or aluminium along the coastal strip rather than painted mild steel.
Shade net carports are popular here for cost, but on the most exposed Blouberg and Big Bay plots a rigid roof usually outlasts fabric — compare the options on shade net carports and steel carports.

Estate rules, plans and approval
Much of Parklands, Sunningdale and Big Bay is newer estate development, so an HOA or estate architectural rule often sets the roof profile and colour before the municipality is even involved.
