A patio awning is a fixed shade roof that cantilevers off the house wall over a patio, stoep or doorway, carrying no posts along its outer edge. Retail kits run from R599 for a 1.2 m door canopy to R4 999 for a 4 m × 3 m fabric patio awning; made-to-measure aluminium and IBR awnings are fabricated to the wall and quoted per site. What a patio awning is
The defining attribute is where the load goes. A patio awning hangs from the building: brackets bolted into the wall carry the frame, and the outer edge is either unsupported or held by light tie-rods back to the same wall. Nothing stands in the middle of the patio. That is what separates it from every other structure on this site, and it is why the span is limited — the wall and its fixings decide how far the awning can project.
KB Carports builds fixed awnings only. Retractable and folding-arm mechanisms are not part of the range: a mechanism is the first thing to fail in Cape Town wind, and it is the part a homeowner cannot service.
Patio awning or patio cover?
These two get used interchangeably and they are not the same structure. The difference is posts, and it decides both the span and the price.

Materials
Three roof materials cover almost every patio awning we fit, and the choice is usually settled by distance from the sea and by how much light the room behind the awning needs to keep.
- Aluminium — no rust without a coating, the lightest load on the wall, and the least maintenance. The default on exposed coastal plots.
- Canvas — the cheapest way to cover a wide patio and the only one that comes in colour. The frame outlasts the fabric, which is replaced in cycles rather than repaired.
- IBR sheeting — the same profile used on carport roofs, matched to the house roof so the awning reads as part of the building rather than an addition.

Wind, sun and the Cape Town south-easter
An awning is a cantilever, so wind loads it hardest at the outer edge and tries to lift it. That governs the specification more than sun does. On the wind-exposed West Coast strip and on the Atlantic Seaboard we shorten the projection, add tie-rods and increase the bracket count rather than fitting the largest awning the wall will nominally take.
Wall type matters as much as wind. Solid brick takes a through-bolted bracket directly. Cavity walls, single-skin garden walls and cladding need the fixing carried back to a structural member, which is settled on the site visit before anything is quoted.

Common questions
How far can a patio awning project from the wall?
Around 3 m is the practical limit for a wall-supported awning, and less on an exposed or non-structural wall. Past that the load stops being something brackets can carry and the structure needs posts, at which point it is a patio cover.
Do I need council approval for a patio awning?
Rules differ by structure type and by how close you build to a boundary, and an awning is treated differently from a roofed structure on posts. The approval question is covered in full on municipality approval.
Will a canvas patio awning last on the coast?
The frame will. Fabric is a wear part everywhere, and salt air and UV shorten its cycle, so on the coast the frame is specified in aluminium or galvanised steel and the fabric is treated as replaceable.
Can an awning attach to a boundary or garden wall?
Sometimes, but a single-skin garden wall is rarely strong enough on its own for anything but a narrow canopy. Where the wall cannot carry the load we build a freestanding structure instead.
