Patio Covers Cape Town — Patio Roofs & Verandas Designed & Installed

Patio covers roof an outdoor living area — a patio, stoep or veranda — and span about 4 m between posts before an intermediate post becomes cheaper than the beam that would avoid it. KB Carports builds them in steel with IBR or polycarbonate sheeting, in timber and in shade net, at published 2026 rates for a 6 m × 6 m footprint of R13 500 in shade net and R34 800 in steel.

Extending the same roof to cover a vehicle alongside the house makes it a patio-attached carport — see carport prices for that option.

What a patio cover adds to the home

BenefitWhat it means day to day
Extended shade and shelterThe patio’s shaded area is extended directly, so the space stays usable in midday sun and light rain — outdoor dining, lounging and entertaining
Weather protection for patio furnitureOutdoor furniture is covered against sun damage, rain and dust, which extends its lifespan and reduces maintenance
Integration with the homeBuilt to blend with the home’s architecture and the existing patio, so it reads as an extension of the indoor living space
More usable patio spaceA covered patio works in a wider range of weather: outdoor dining, a children’s play area, or a shaded retreat
Curb appealA well-designed patio carport adds curb appeal and functionality — both factors in overall property value

The defining attribute of a patio cover is the solid roof: sheeting that blocks sun and rain outright, so the space underneath stays usable in a Cape Town winter. If you would rather filter the light than block it, an open slatted roof over the same area is a pergolas in Cape Town.

There is a third option when the patio is narrow and you do not want posts in the space at all: patio awnings hang off the house wall on brackets, with nothing standing on the paving.

Attached or freestanding?

Attached where the cover can run off the existing house roofline, freestanding where it cannot.

  • Attached patio carports: fixed directly to the house roofline as a seamless extension of the existing patio cover, for a cohesive and integrated look.
  • Freestanding patio carports: stand independently near the patio, designed to complement its style and landscaping. This is the option where direct attachment to the house is not feasible or not wanted.

Matching the patio cover to your house

  • Architectural harmony: rooflines, colours and materials selected to complement the home’s architectural style.
  • Existing patio features: the design ties into paving, landscaping and outdoor lighting already in place, for one unified outdoor living space.
  • Indoor-outdoor flow: consistent flooring materials and design elements carry the house through to the covered patio.

KB Carports builds custom carports in Cape Town, including patio covers tied into an existing roofline.

Installation requirements

  • Professional installation: the structure is load-bearing and ties into the house, so professional installation protects safety, structural integrity and the fit with the patio and house.
  • Building regulations: check local building regulations and permit requirements, particularly where the carport attaches to the existing house structure.
  • Foundation and anchoring: a solid foundation is required — extending the existing patio slab or casting new footings — with proper anchoring to the house for attached structures, or to the ground for freestanding ones.

What a patio cover costs

Patio covers are quoted per site. The roof is the cost: sheeting, the beams that carry it, and the waterproofing and flashing where it meets the house. For a sense of scale, KB Carports’ published 2026 rate for a 6 m × 6 m steel structure with a solid roof is R34 800 installed, and the same footprint in shade net is R13 500 — see carport prices in Cape Town for the full list.

The variables on a patio cover specifically:

  • Attached or freestanding — attaching saves posts but adds a flashing detail into the existing roof or wall.
  • Sheeting — IBR is the cheapest solid roof; polycarbonate costs more and keeps the room behind it light.
  • Fall and drainage — a roof over a living area needs somewhere for winter rain to go, which usually means a gutter and a downpipe.
  • Existing structure — what the roof can tie into is often the thing that decides the whole design.

How far a patio cover can span

A patio cover carries its own load on posts, so it is not limited the way a wall-mounted awning is. In practice the span is set by beam depth: past roughly 4 m between posts the beam has to grow noticeably, and there is a point where an intermediate post is both cheaper and better-looking than the beam that would avoid it.

Where posts would land badly — across a doorway, in a walkway, on an existing paved edge — the options are a cantilever off one side, or a wall-mounted structure with no outer posts at all. That second option is a patio awnings build rather than a patio cover.

Do you need approval for a patio cover?

It depends on the structure and on where it sits relative to your boundary, and it is worth settling before design rather than after. A roofed structure attached to the house is treated differently from a freestanding one, and building lines apply regardless of what the structure is called. The rules and the process are set out on municipality approval.

Is a patio cover right for your home?

It suits homeowners who want covered outdoor living and vehicle protection from a single structure, built to match the patio and house rather than sit apart from them. Contact us for a patio carport design consultation.
