How a shade sail works
The fabric is a knitted HDPE shade cloth, not a solid sheet. It blocks a rated percentage of sunlight while letting air pass through, which is why a shade sail sits cooler underneath than a solid roof and why it does not trap heat. Tension is what makes it work: the fabric is pulled taut between anchor points so it sheds wind and water rather than pooling or flapping. A slack sail is a failed sail.
Shade sails shade very effectively against sun and give some cover in light rain, but they are not an all-weather roof — heavy rain and hail pass through or run off the low corner. If you need the area genuinely dry, the answer is a solid roof: compare the shade sail against a carport before deciding.
Shapes, sizes and anchoring
- Triangles — three anchor points, the simplest to tension well and the most forgiving on an awkward site.
- Squares and rectangles — four anchor points, more shade per square metre, and the usual choice over a patio or parking bay.
- Overlapping sails — two or more panels at different heights to cover a larger area while leaving gaps for wind to escape.
- Anchoring — steel posts set in concrete footings, or fixings into a wall or existing structure where one is sound enough to take the load.
Every sail is measured and made for the site. Anchor height and post placement are set on site, because the fall across the sail is what sheds water and wind.
Shade fabric density
Shade cloth is rated by how much sunlight it blocks. The denser the cloth, the deeper the shade and the less light reaches what is underneath.

Shade sails and Cape Town wind
This is the constraint that decides whether a shade sail lasts here. The south-easter loads a sail hard, and the load goes into the anchor points rather than the fabric. Undersized posts and shallow footings are the usual reason a sail fails — the cloth tears at a corner fixing, or a post leans. On exposed sites, particularly along the West Coast and the Atlantic Seaboard, we specify deeper footings, heavier posts and galvanised hardware, and we will say plainly when a site is too exposed for fabric and better served by a rigid roof.
Shade cloth is also a consumable. UV degrades it over years, so a sail is re-tensioned periodically and eventually recovered — the frame and posts stay.
Shade sail, shadeport or carport?
- Shade sail — best for shading an open area with an architectural look: patios, pools, play areas, seating.
- Shade net carport (shadeport) — the same fabric on a four-post frame over parking; the cheapest way to cover vehicles.
- Steel carport — a solid roof when the vehicle or the space has to stay genuinely dry.

What a shade sail costs
Shade sails are quoted per site rather than off a price list, because cost is driven by the span, the number and height of the posts, how much concrete the footings need and the shade density chosen — a sail anchored to two existing walls and a sail needing four new posts in rock are very different jobs. Common questions
Do shade sails keep rain off?
Only light rain. The fabric sheds some water down the fall of the sail, but it is not a waterproof roof — heavy rain and hail get through. Use a solid roof if the area must stay dry.
How long does a shade sail last?
The posts and fixings last indefinitely if they are properly specified. The cloth is the consumable — UV breaks it down over years, and it is re-tensioned and eventually replaced on the same frame.
Can a shade sail handle Cape Town wind?
Yes, when the anchors are engineered for it. Wind load goes into the posts and footings, so those are what have to be right. On the most exposed sites we will recommend a rigid roof instead.

Shade sail shapes
Shape is a structural decision before it is an aesthetic one. A sail is held in tension, so every corner needs something solid to pull against — a post, a wall, or a substantial tree.

Larger single sails sag. That is not a fitting fault — it is what happens when a flexible membrane spans too far between too few points. Two overlapping triangles will hold their shape over an area where one big rectangle will not, which is why wide installations are usually broken up rather than scaled up.
Waterproof sails and shade-only sails
Most shade sails are not waterproof, and buyers are often surprised by it. Standard shade cloth is a knitted HDPE mesh: it is designed to block a rated percentage of UV while letting air through, and air passing through means water passes through too. That permeability is a feature — it is why a shade sail survives wind that would tear a solid membrane off its anchors.
- Shade cloth (knitted HDPE) — blocks 30% to 90% of UV depending on the density specified. Sheds a light shower, will not keep you dry in Cape Town winter rain.
- Waterproof membrane (coated PVC) — genuinely sheds water, but it must be pitched so rain runs off, and it catches far more wind. It needs heavier posts, deeper footings and a designed fall.
