Shade net is the most affordable way to cover two cars; steel is the most durable and the most expensive. A cantilever removes the two front posts so you can open car doors freely and reverse in without weaving — that extra engineering is why a cantilever shadeport costs roughly double a four-post one.
Which double carport suits your home?
- Shade net (shadeport) — cheapest to cover two cars, blocks sun and most rain, and the fabric is replaceable. Best value if sun protection is the main goal.
- Wooden double carport — suits older and heritage-sensitive streetscapes; needs periodic sealing.
- Steel double carport — the most rigid option and the one we specify on wind-exposed and coastal sites. Galvanised, with IBR or polycarbonate roofing.
- Aluminium — lighter and corrosion-resistant; quoted per site.
What size is a double carport?
Our standard double is 6m wide × 6m long, which covers two vehicles with room to open doors and walk between them. If your driveway is narrower, a tandem layout (two cars one behind the other) is often the better fit. Full dimensions for every size are on our standard carport sizes page.
What changes a double carport quote
- Site access and ground — footings in rock, paving that must be lifted and re-laid, or a tight side passage all add labour.
- Slope — a driveway that falls sharply needs stepped footings and longer posts on the low side.
- Wind exposure — on the West Coast and Atlantic Seaboard we increase footing depth and bracing, and specify galvanised or aluminium over painted mild steel because of coastal salt.
- Roof specification — IBR, polycarbonate or shade net, plus gutters and downpipes if you want the run-off controlled.
- Attachment — freestanding versus fixed to the house fascia.
Double carport or two single carports?
A single 6m × 6m double is almost always cheaper than two singles, because it shares posts, footings and one continuous roof. Two separate singles only make sense when the parking bays are physically apart, or when a tree, servitude or building line sits between them.
Do you need plans for a double carport?
