What is a carport?
A carport is a roofed structure on posts, open on the sides, built to cover parked vehicles. It has no walls and no door. In South Africa the word usually means a solid roof — IBR steel sheeting, polycarbonate or timber — as opposed to a shadeport, which is roofed with tensioned shade cloth.
Carport vs shadeport
Both are open structures on posts. The roof is the whole difference, and it decides cost, lifespan and how much weather you actually keep off the car.
- A shadeport is roofed with tensioned shade net. It blocks sun and most rain, is by far the cheapest option, and the cloth can be replaced when it eventually degrades in UV. Heavy driven rain will still get through.
- A carport has a solid roof, so it keeps off all rain, hail and falling leaves, and it lasts longer with less attention. It costs roughly twice as much for the same two-car footprint.

Carport vs garage
A garage is an enclosed building: walls, a roof and a door. That gets you security, secure storage and a lockable workspace, and it is the only option that protects against theft. It also needs approved building plans, takes weeks rather than days, and costs several times what a carport does.
A carport gets you the weather protection — which is most of the practical benefit — for a fraction of the money and disruption. That is why most South African homes adding cover to an existing driveway add a carport rather than build a garage.
